Visual Literacy Programs

                         Grades 1–10

School group excursions to Illustration House at South Bank provide direct contact and experience with the world of book creation.  Illustration House offers curriculum integrated visual literacy programs for grades 2 to 10 that periodically link  with specific exhibitions in our calendar throughout the year.

Each visual literacy workshop is a 75 minute journey into the world of the author and illustrator.  Students will learn to look beyond the words and discover the visual author within themselves.

Programs provide critical analysis and hands on application for students through a range of programs that explore the use of colour,

shape, sound, perspectives, and symbols, to express size, strength, texture, and mood, and convey a message regardless of language barriers. They will look at choices an illustrator makes in the development of a book, and explore the choices they themselves may make, in addition to the collaborative process authors, illustrators, and publishers engage in during the creation of a book.

· The visual and written narrative

· The collaboration process - author, illustrator, editor…

· Sequencing through pictures

· Visual Literacy in advertising - exploring visual media, images and communication

· Identifying, symbolism,

      cause and effect, stereotypes, mood

· The creation and delivery of visual materials…

Illustration House provided our Year 1 Students with a valuable opportunity to see how a book comes into existence. From the initial discussions about what we wanted to achieve from our visit, through to the presentation, staff were keen to meet the outcomes we had in mind. The personalised presentation relating to narrative texts gave our children the opportunity to have hands on experience with seeing not only how illustrations are created for books but also how the main elements of a text are developed. The opportunity to attend Illustration House and participate in this experience made it a tangible reality for children and staff alike. This was a worthwhile and enjoyable learning experience!
