French Canadian Master Painter Marcel Desbiens is a rare art teacher to find. He takes you through the extensive array of traditional and modern applications in the use of oil paints in this extensive 10 week course.

In this introductory to advance course you will gain skills and knowledge to paint in oil using modern materials based on the traditional techniques of the old masters, how to apply them e.g. chiaroscuro, transparent, Flemish, Venetian and glazing techniques, colour psychology and mixing.

Over the course of 10 weeks you will acquire the knowledge to develop more complex subjects and increase your creative potential with new discoveries in materials and techniques. You will explore subtle optical effects and a variety of painting techniques to produce a rich combination of sensual colours, forms and compositions. You will be able to stretch your canvas and preparing your boards, painting different realist subject such as drapes, clouds, trees, and explore the infinite world of abstract painting.

Once having completed the course you will be ready to go into a mentored group and with one on one tutoring under Marcel and begin to develop your own style and personality in your paintings.

Although labeled as introductory to advanced this course is not only for beginners, but also for those that have already had experience with the use of oils but have not had this essential and dedicated teaching in the varying techniques of both modern artists and the traditional masters. This course is a prerequisite to joining a mentored group in oils (see below).

Duration: 5 weeks

Class length: 3 hours per session

Day: Thursday Evenings 6.30pm—9.30pm (5weeks $255)

Next Course begins TBA (this is the last advanced course before the new combined intro and advanced course starts on July 28th. If you have completed the intro but are still planning to the advanced we suggest you enrol now as this will be the last opportunity to complete the two separately!

Cost: $510. Cost includes GST, all materials, and FREE parking in the South Bank underground Parking area if required. Pre payment when booking is essential as classes are kept small to ensure quality of teaching.

Mentored Oil Painting Group

The groups are less structured than the classes and offer one on one tuition via small groups of up to ten. Each person is working at their own pace and their particular needs are addressed via direct tutoring rather than group exercises. They are an excellent platform for which to really begin to grow in your artistic pursuit and put all of the techniques learned through the 10 week intro-advanced course into place, whilst working in a group atmosphere that allows for growth and support.

Once you are at the mentored stage you are required to supply own materials and canvases which you can work on at home in addition to our studio.

Duration: Ongoing weekly

Class length: 3 hours per session

Day: Tuesday Evenings 6.30pm—9.30pm
