Art Classes

Children’s classes at Illustration House are viewed in exactly the same way we do adult classes. That is why we see such amazing results.  Whilst there is a very good place for simple art play and exploration, children are competent and capable of learning skills of a very high standard when teachers understand that the child really desires to learn, and how to help him or her to achieve their goals.

Champions of Change

This  highly significant research study undertaken in the United States looked at over 25,000 student participants. The following is a small excerpt from the executive summary of the report.

WHAT THE ARTS CHANGE ABOUT THE LEARNING EXPERIENCE

As a result of t heir varied inquiries, the Champions of Change researchers found that learners can attain higher levels of achievement t though their engagement with the art s. Moreover, one of the critical research findings is that the learning in and through the arts can help “level the playing field ” for youngsters from disadvantaged circumstances.

James Catterall ’s analysis of the Department of Education’s NELS:88 database of 25,000 students demonstrates that students with high levels of arts  participation outperform “arts - poor ”students by virtually every measure. Since arts participation is highly correlated with socioeconomic status , which is the most significant predictor of academic performance , this comes as little surprise . The size and diversity of t he NELS database, however, permitted Catterall to find statistical significance in comparisons of high and low arts participants in the lowest socioeconomic segments.  This closer look showed that high arts participation makes a more significant difference to students from low - i n come back grounds than for high-income students .

In addition to our ‘Children’s’ and ‘Young Artist’s’ classes, Illustration House also have an advanced Children’s Class for mixed aged students that show a high degree of art ability, and enjoy having their boundaries pushed with added challenges.  Current students range in age from 10 years to 17, and are working at adult level.

Our term based after school art classes cover composition, line work, perspective, tone, rendering techniques etc.  Children gain greater self esteem and self confidence as they grow and develop in their art practice. The teachers at Illustration House know that a child is capable of great things when nurtured, and given not only the encouragement, but also the opportunity to learn and enjoy the creative pursuits.

Champions of Change research data from America proves that arts involved students out perform arts poor students on almost every level including math and science. Teachers at Illustration House know that there is so much more to learning art than just creating a picture!
